Rules for stories, notes and in-person help on Moved to Act, covering consent, privacy, money requests, partisan campaigning and safety.
Every story is reviewed first
Nothing appears in the feed until a member of our team has reviewed it. For news stories we check the facts against the original report, and for member stories we check that the people in them agreed to be included. If we add automated screening to help reviewers, this page will say so.
People in stories
Share a story about someone only if they have agreed to it. Write about the people you helped as partners with their own skills and choices, and leave out details that would embarrass them. We remove content that uses someone's hardship to get attention.
People named in news stories
Our news stories summarize reports that have already been published. We name people only as the original report named them, we add no details about them, and we link to the report. Anyone who is in a story, or who speaks for someone who is, can ask us to change or remove it with the link at the foot of the story. We take the story down while we look into the request.
Personal details
Do not post anyone's exact address or phone number, including your own. Name a town or a neighborhood instead. Leave out the names and faces of children.
No money requests
Do not ask members for money or loans, and do not post fundraisers. Moved to Act never handles money, and actions that involve giving link only to established organizations we have checked.
No partisan campaigning
Do not use the site for partisan campaigning, including for or against candidates or ballot measures. Stories about civic service, such as working as a poll worker, are welcome.
Helping in person
Help involving children or other vulnerable people, including frail elders, goes only through organizations that run their own background checks. Help between neighbors should start with low-risk tasks such as yard work, and a first meeting should be in a public place. Never enter a stranger's home or handle anyone's money, and do not give medical advice.
Treating each other well
Keep thank-yous and notes specific and honest. Harassment and hateful content are removed, whether they target members or the people in stories.
How moderation works
To report a post or a member, write to contact@movedtoact.com. A reviewer reads every report and may edit out personal details, take the post down, suspend the account or close it. If you think we got a decision wrong, write to the same address and ask us to look again.
