Privacy

What Moved to Act collects and why. No advertising, and no selling or sharing your data for targeting. Export or deletion on request.

Who is responsible

Moved to Act is operated by the Emergent Frontiers Institute, which is responsible for the data described here. Contact: contact@movedtoact.com. Last updated 5 October 2026.

What you give us

  • Your email address, used to sign in and for messages about your account.
  • The display name you choose, shown next to what you post.
  • Your country, if you choose to give it, so your feed pairs stories with actions you can do where

you live.

  • Your postcode or ZIP code, if you choose to give it. For a US ZIP code the site shows how far away

local actions are, using the center point of that ZIP area. We never ask for your precise location.

  • What you post, including photos, which have their location data removed when you upload them.

What we record as you use the site

We record the taps you make in the feed, such as opening a story, answering "Did this move you?" or committing to an action, the actions you save for later, and the actions you mark done. About a week after you open a story we sometimes ask whether you are glad you saw it, and about a week after you finish an action we ask whether you are glad you did it. Answers from many members together decide which stories others see; nobody else sees your own answers. We also note each day on which you open the site, which tells us whether the site takes up more of people's time than it should. The site sets a cookie to keep you signed in, and the sign-in service records sign-in attempts to protect accounts from misuse. The site runs no analytics or advertising trackers.

Private notes

After you mark an action done you can write a private note. Only you can see it. Builders cannot read it, it is never used to choose stories, and it is never included in research data. It is included when you download your record, you can delete it at any time, and it is deleted with your account.

How we use it

We use your data to run your account, choose your daily feed, deliver thank-yous and updates, and keep your record. If you agree to research use of your activity, we study what you do from the day you agree, together with other participants' activity, with names and email addresses removed. If you don't agree, your activity is used only to run your account and choose your feed. Each research choice is made separately on the research page, and we keep a record of each choice with its date and the version of the text you read. That record is deleted with your account. Site-wide totals, such as the number of actions members have completed, count every member without naming anyone.

Crews (not yet open)

If you join a crew, the other people in it see your display name, your role in the crew and which of the crew's missions you joined and finished. Nobody else outside the crew sees this, except our reviewers, who can see a crew's missions and member list when a mission needs review or someone reports it.

Community spaces

Some community features may be opened to members in stages, such as a discussion thread inside each crew. They are switched off at present. When one is open, what you post there is seen only by the members of that space and by builders, never by visitors or search engines. Posts are not used to choose stories or for research without your separate consent. You can delete your own posts at any time, and they are included when you download your record.

Partner organizations

When you mark done an action run by an organization that works with us, people at that organization whom we have approved can see your display name, the date, the note you wrote when you marked it done, and whether you added a photo or link. They never see your email address or the photo itself. They can confirm what you did, tell you what came of it, and thank you.

Badges

When you ask for a badge, the people who check it see your display name and the evidence you send. That is a Moved to Act builder, or, for a badge that belongs to an organization, people we have approved at that organization. Badges you hold show on your record.

Check-ins (optional)

If you agree to the wellbeing and empathy check-ins, we store your answers and scores. Answers about your wellbeing are health information, and we store and use them only with your explicit consent, which you give or refuse on the research page. You see your own wellbeing score. Builders see only averages across five or more members, never one person's answers. Nobody at Moved to Act sees or follows up on your individual score, so each score comes with the national crisis line for your country, or a link to findahelpline.com. You can stop at any time, and stopping deletes every answer you gave. Answers are not shared with anyone for research until an ethics review approves it, and this notice will name the research partner before that happens. The check-ins are a separate choice from research use of your activity and from tests of new features.

Tests of new features

To learn which features help, we may show different members slightly different versions of the site, such as six or eight stories a day, and compare how things go. Only members who agree to tests of new features are placed in one; everyone else always sees the standard version. While a test runs, members in it are not told which version they have, because knowing could change how they use it. When the test ends, each member's Settings page shows which version they had, and the results are published on this site. No test will put anyone at risk, hide safety information or change how thank-yous work. Data used to study these tests, or shared with a research partner, has names, email addresses, postcodes and anything you wrote removed, and dates cut to the week. Feature tests stay switched off until an ethics review covers them.

Notifications

If you turn on notifications on a device, we store the address your browser gives us for that device and the keys used to encrypt messages to it. Your browser's push service (Google, Apple or Mozilla, depending on the device) carries each message but cannot read it. You can turn notifications off on Me at any time.

Messages you send us

When you write through the contact form we keep your name, email address, message and the network address it came from, to answer you and to look after the site.

People who are not members

Some people give us information without joining:

  • People who send a thank-you through a link. We keep the name you give, if any, and your

message, which a person reads before it is delivered to the member who helped you. We keep a record of the network address the message came from, used only to prevent abuse.

  • People who write to us through the contact form. See "Messages you send us" above.
  • People named in news stories. Our news stories name people only as the published report named

them. Anyone in a story can ask us to change or remove it with the link at the foot of the story.

Staff at partner organizations sign in with a Moved to Act account. We keep which organization they act for and what they do on its behalf, such as confirming that a member finished an action, posting what came of it, or sending thanks.

What we never do

Moved to Act shows no advertising. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone for advertising or targeting.

Who else handles it

Account email is sent through Postmark. Forms are checked for spam with Cloudflare Turnstile. Automatic first review of stories, thank-you messages and community posts is off; if the Institute turns it on, their text will be sent to Anthropic's API for that review, and this notice will say so first. When you do an action on another organization's site, such as the NMDP registry or DonorsChoose, that organization's privacy policy covers what you give it.

Export and deletion

You can download a copy of your record at any time from your record page, including your private notes and any community posts. You can delete your account yourself under Settings on your record: deleting removes your record, notes, posts and answers at once. If you would rather, write to contact@movedtoact.com from your account email and we will do it for you.

Age

The site is for people 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone younger.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that affects you, we will email members before the change takes effect.
