Volunteers transcribed a million Library of Congress documents

By the end of 2025, volunteers in the Library of Congress's By the People program had completed one million transcriptions of handwritten and typed documents from the Library's collections. The program opened in 2018, signed up its 50,000th volunteer during 2025 and has finished more than 50 campaigns, from Georgia O'Keeffe's letters to Leonard Bernstein's writings and papers of women in the Civil War era. Seven new campaigns opened in 2025, among them the journals and sketchbooks of Benajah Jay Antrim. Each finished transcription turns a page image into text that anyone can search on loc.gov.
