The Moon's shadow crossed North America in April 2024

On April 8, 2024, the Moon's shadow swept across North America from Mexico's Pacific coast to Newfoundland, and millions of people stood in the path of totality as the sky went dark in the middle of the day. Astronauts on the International Space Station watched the shadow cross the ground from 261 miles up, and NASA jets flying at 50,000 feet chased it to extend their time observing the Sun. On the ground, volunteers with the Eclipse Soundscapes project recorded how wildlife responded to the sudden dusk.
