The strongest solar storm in two decades lit southern skies

In one week in May 2024 the Sun produced 82 notable flares, eight of them in the most powerful X class, and sent at least seven clouds of solar material toward Earth. The storm that followed reached G5, the top of the scale, for the first time since 2003. Auroras appeared as far south as the southern United States and northern India, and the display may rank among the strongest in 500 years. Thousands of people sent their sightings to Aurorasaurus, a citizen science project that tracks auroras.
