Red Cross volunteers stayed with a family after a fire

In late March, oil that Robert Williams was heating to fry fish on his back deck in Oregon caught fire, and the flames spread into the house and forced the family out. Neighbors gathered to help while firefighters worked. As the crews finished, Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers Rebecca and Steve Long, a married couple, arrived with blankets and found the family a safe place to sit. The Red Cross provided food, water and toiletries, gave financial help and arranged temporary lodging. The Longs kept checking in over the following days and helped the family get medications. Williams called the volunteers "a godsend."
