A retired volunteer has tutored young readers for 10,934 hours

Bill Wolff retired after 40 years in insurance and began tutoring children in reading with Literations, the Boston partner of AARP Foundation Experience Corps, at the William Blackstone Innovation School in the South End. By 2024 he had given 10,934 hours, and he received the President's Volunteer Service Award at the Lifetime Achievement level. When budget cuts hit the school, he co-founded a friends group to pay for field trips and technology. Wolff says the best part of volunteering is "the relationships I've built." Five other Literations tutors received the same award that year, each with more than 4,500 hours of service.
