A Stop the Bleed instructor stopped at a roadside crash
In July 2024 a car turned into motorcyclist Fred King's lane in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Another bystander had already made a tourniquet from a belt when Jake Allred, a Stop the Bleed instructor, pulled over and replaced it with a proper tourniquet from his own first-aid kit. Allred said his training "automatically kicked in." King lost his leg and spent eight weeks in the hospital, then practiced for five months on a prosthetic leg and was riding again. In May 2026 he met the people who helped him at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where nearly 7,000 local residents have taken the hospital's Stop the Bleed class.
