Volunteers sent 3,000 handmade cards to nursing home residents

Susan Saunders, a retired nurse in Virginia Beach, Virginia, started a group that meets twice a month at St. Nicholas Catholic Church to make greeting cards by hand for people living in nursing homes. In the year before this report the volunteers made and delivered more than 3,000 cards. Saunders says a card is like a gift, and card maker Georgia Brown said handmade cards offer "personal communication in an age of email and texts." After a local resident, Christine McGrath, nominated the group, it received a $300 community award from a local television station.
