520 volunteers pulled 13 tons of trash from a river

On September 20, 2025, 520 volunteers spread across 21 sites along California's Russian River, from Ukiah down to Monte Rio, for the 39th annual Russian River Watershed Cleanup, part of California Coastal Cleanup Day. By the end of the day they had removed 13 tons of trash, about eight tons in Mendocino County and five in Sonoma County, plus an overflowing truckload of tires. Volunteers also found a violin and a piano underwater and left them for a later removal effort. Dillon Williams of the Progressive Tribal Alliance described the work as "about relationship and respect."
